The biography of Mayor Datu Akmad Mitra Ampatuan Sr. (or Akmad) is one of Maguindanao del Sur‘s most well–known, and also infamous, political figures. Akmad is the sitting mayor of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao‘s provincial capital, and has gained notoriety Not only was he a politically resilient individual, but he is also a survivor of numerous assassination attempts that would have claimed the life of nearly anyone else.
His life embodies the themes of clan politics, moral courage, betrayal, and a strong resolve to continue representing those who have elected him, even when faced with threats to his life.
Family Background and Early Political Life
Akmad Ampatuan was born into a powerful clan of politicians—the Ampatuans, Mindanao’s largest Muslim political dynasty. Since the late 20th century, the Ampatuans have held control over much of Maguindanao, with clan patriarch Datu Andal Ampatuan Sr. acting as governor of the province from 2001 until he was arrested in 2009.
The Ampatuans‘ rise to power began when President Corazon Aquino appointed Andal Sr. as Chief-of-Office for Maganoy (Shariff Aguak) shortly after the People Power Revolution in 1986. They have continued to consolidate their power through both electoral successes and alliances, along with control of state-supported militias.
As a member of such an eminent family, Akmad initially enjoyed the support of his relatives, using the political machinery of his clan to launch his political career. He began to participate at the local level and eventually attained the position of vice mayor of Shariff Aguak. This offered him access to the traditional power structure created by his family over many years. The family, the Ampatuans, achieved almost all of their elected positions unopposed. It was also noted by others that seldom would someone run against the Ampatuans for elected office, because of the fierce intimidation and threats of violence directed at opponents. At this time, the Ampatuans maintained a privately funded army of thousands (including paramilitaries, police, and military members) that were loyal only to the clan‘s leaders.
The Maguindanao Massacre and Breaking Ranks
However, Akmad’s life was forever altered on November 23, 2009. On this date, an event that has since been referred to as the Maguindanao Massacre, or Ampatuan Massacre (the deadliest event ever recorded in history for journalists), took place when 58 people were killed in a horrific manner. The majority of the individuals that were murdered were family members, friends, and supporters of Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, who was challenging Andal Ampatuan Jr. for the governorship of Maguindanao.
In total, 32 journalists working with the group of supporters were also among the victims. The convoy was ambushed on the way to Ampatuan when the group was attacked, and their bodies were subsequently placed into predug mass graves. The graves were dug in advance, with the aid of an equipment backhoe with a nameplate on it, showing that it belonged to the governor.
In the aftermath of this horrific crime, Akmad made the extraordinarily courageous decision to break ranks with his powerful relatives. Despite the risks to his life and the betrayal this represented within the clan structure, he agreed to testify for the prosecution against his own family members, including the late patriarch Andal Ampatuan Sr. and his sons Andal Jr., Zaldy, and others.
His testimony provided crucial insider evidence about the clan’s operations, their control of armed forces, and the planning that preceded the massacre. For this act of conscience, Akmad was admitted into the Department of Justice’s Witness Protection Program, though as subsequent events would prove, this protection would be far from adequate.
Political Career Amidst Danger
Despite the imminent threat upon his life, Akmad continued to pursue his political career; and in 2022, he and his son Engineer Marop Ampatuan successfully ran for the position of Mayor of Shariff Aguak in Maguindanao Province, and won the election, both by a large margin in the municipal election. The results of the municipal election demonstrated that Akmad retained considerable support from the constituency despite his separation from the main faction of the Ampatuans.
Akmad‘s main campaign issues included a commitment to provide additional educational opportunities and to improve the quality of the infrastructure within the municipality, as well as his intent to distance himself from the historical cycle of violent family politics within this region.
A Life Under Siege – Datu Akmad Ampatuan Biography
The Mayor‘s decision to become a witness against his relatives undoubtedly marked him as a target. Since 2010, he has survived at least four attempted assassination attempts, which exemplified the sophisticated nature of the threats towards him and the remarkable amount of luck he has had in continuing to live through them.
On the morning of January 25, 2026, while on his way home from the mosque in his bulletproof truck, Mayor Ampatuan‘s convoy was attacked by two gunmen that got out of a white minivan. Surveillance cameras caught the dramatic events unfold when one of the gunmen using a rocket propelled grenade fired it directly into Mayor Ampatuan‘s vehicle creating a fireball and cloud of smoke upon impact. Luckily, the armored plating protected him from any injuries; however, others including two members of the Mayor‘s security detail and one civilian were wounded. During an early morning pursuit operation, three suspects – Budtong “Rap-Rap” Alim Pendatun, Tekz Malid Pendatun, and Puasa Oting Madid – were killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement authorities.
In a press conference after the RPG attack, Ampatuan appeared visibly shaken by the extent of the firepower directed at him. “I did not expect there to be a weapon this large,“ he said. “An RPG is not something a ‘normal‘ person would probably possess. This person is very professional.” He went on to express concern about a disturbing trend: his security personnel from both the Department of Justice and police agencies had been constantly removed prior to each attempt. By December of 2025, he was left without official security, which made him extremely vulnerable.
The Shariff Aguak Legacy and Current Status

He belonged to the Ampatuan family, who continue to be involved in electoral politics throughout multiple municipalities within the province of Maguindanao del Sur. He had created an independent electoral presence for himself in Shariff Aguak and ran for office with continual threats against his life. His experience reflects a continuing hold on Filipino cultural identity based on traditional family values and how individuals with strong moral conviction may defy the tremendous forces pushing toward conformity.
Today, while Datu Akmad Mitra Ampatuan Sr. remains as a sitting mayor, he serves as an example of persistence. This man has overcome numerous attempts on his life while diligently pursuing political change for the betterment of his municipality. The future of Datu Akmad Mitra Ampatuan Sr. will depend on whether hi biography will continue to be shaped by the spectre of the massacre or whether he can use this experience to create a new Shariff Aguak where governance is based on service rather than violence. Only time will reveal the truth of this situation and whether Datu Akmad Mitra Ampatuan Sr. will ultimately obtain all of the answers about the events of the massacre.
